Court forbids Munkevics' election to Jurmala council institutions
However, no prohibition has been placed on the former mayor from approaching council deputy Iveta Blaua (New Era) or other municipal deputies.
The decision was taken after a request was examined to apply further security measures to Munkevics, LETA was told afterwards by Prosecutor Velta Zaluksne and Munkevics' lawyer, Aivo Leimanis.
According to Zaluksne, she will definitely appeal the decision. Meanwhile, Leimanis indicated that the decision to forbid Munkevics' election to council institutions is in contradiction of the Law on Local Governments.
After the decision was announced, Munkevics himself said that he regarded the recent events in Jurmala City Council as a political game. The former mayor stressed that the court's decision did not prevent him from taking part and voting in sittings of the council.
The request to apply further security measures to Munkevics - a prohibition from approaching deputy Blaua and the council building - was submitted by Blaua herself, a witness in the case, who complained of coercion on Munkevics' part.
Prosecutor Zaluksne had forwarded the request to the court with a plea to forbid Munkevics from approaching Blaua, as well as two other council deputies who have also been named as witnesses in the case.
