Latvian ministers congratulate new European Commission

Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (New Era) and Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins (People's Party) have congratulated the new European Commission, expressing their determination to continue successful cooperation.

In a letter of congratulation to European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs, the prime minister expressed the Latvian government's high regard for the efforts of the previous European Commission (EC), as well as his gratitude for Piebalgs' contributions in the field of energy, which was a special priority for Latvia. He also expressed his conviction that Piebalgs' experience would allow him to resolve future challenges to EU member states in the field of development.

In a letter to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, the premier again expressed the Latvian government's high regard for the work of the Commission, and expressed his special thanks for the support of the Commission and its president in overcoming the effects of the global economic and financial crisis on the Latvian economy. He commented that this proves the power of solidarity, and added that the Latvian government was ready for further activity in the common interests of the EU.

Meanwhile, Riekstins wished success to Barroso, Vice-President and High Representative Catherine Ashton, as well as the new commissioners. He also expressed his confidence in the Commission's continued work in dealing with the consequences of the global crisis and strengthening the EU's international role and competitiveness.

As reported earlier, deputies of the European Parliament approved the new European Commission Cabinet in Strasbourg yesterday, voting in favor of the new team by an overwhelming 488 to 137 with 72 abstentions. The new Commission began its work today.
