Unity begins media campaign to get people to vote ''against'' in language referendum

The leading coalition party, Unity, has begun a media campaign to get people to vote ''against'' Russian becoming an official language in the upcoming referendum.

As LETA was informed by Unity press secretary Laila Timrota, many of Unity's leaders will address the country's residents on radio advertisements, urging them to participate in the referendum and vote against the proposed Constitutional amendments.

The party will also circulate a special newspaper to residents throughout the country.

Furthermore, Unity's regional branches will also be active in the party's pre-referendum activities in their respective areas.

As reported, the referendum on granting the status of state language to Russian is scheduled to be held on February 18.

771,893 votes will be required to make Russian a second official language in Latvia.
