Over 50 judges file petitions in Constitutional Court for examination of their wage cuts

(LETA) - The Constitutional Court accepted two petitions today, where more than 50 judges altogether request that a provision in the transitional regulations on the rule of law, which stipulates that judges' are paid 73 percent of their salaries in 2010 and 2011, be reviewed, as Lina Kovalevska, aide to the Constitutional Court's chairman, told LETA.

One of the petitions has been signed by 23 persons, and the other by 28, Kovalevska added.

The judges who have signed the petitions claim that the Constitutional Court appraises whether the said provision conforms with the Constitution's articles 1 - "Latvia is an independent democratic republic", 83 - "Judges shall be independent and subject only to the law", and 107 - "Every employed person has the right to receive, for work completed, commensurate remuneration no less than the minimum wage established by the State, and has the right to weekly holidays and a paid annual vacation".

Kovalevska said that a decision would be made in about a month whether the Constitutional Court would accept the petitions and open a case.
