Foreign Minister Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis will attend informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers

The agenda of the event will focus on the implementation of the 2010 NATO Lisbon Summit, including discussions on the reform of NATO’s new partnership policies. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton will also take part in the meeting.

Within the format of the NATO member states and partner countries involved in the United Protector operation, a debate will be held on the situation in Libya. The participants will also review the matters regarding the involvement of the international community in the implementation of the UNSC Resolutions 1970 (2011) and 1973 (2011) for protecting civilians and further steps towards resolving the crisis in Libya. Meanwhile, at the session of the ISAF states, the ministers will debate the situation in Afghanistan, launching the transfer of responsibility for security, as well as long-term co-operation between NATO and Afghanistan.

The NATO-Georgia Commission will also convene to discuss Georgia’s Annual National Programme. The NATO-Ukraine Commission, for its part, will talk about NATO-Ukrainian future co-operation. The programme of the ministerial meeting will be concluded by the session of the NATO-Russia Council, where the participants are to hold a discussion on Libya, the anti-missile defence system, and Afghanistan, covering also the NATO-Russia Council’s project on training in combating drugs, as well as other joint projects.
