Aboltina emphasizes necessity to foster EP's comprehension of Baltic demands in direct payments area
It is important to focus and make sure that as many as possible European Parliament members comprehend the issue of direct area payments in Latvia and the Baltic States, Saeima Speaker Solvita Aboltina (Unity) emphasized after today's meetings with Baltic agriculture ministers and European Parliament members.
Aboltina stressed that the Baltic States must stand united on this issue so that it would be perceived as not only Latvian, but also Baltic.
The Saeima speaker pointed out that it is necessary to foster the European Parliament's comprehension regarding the matter, so that its members would realize that it is not only about the redistribution of resources, but also about an injustice to Latvian farmers.
"All of our foreign policy activity is currently dedicated to discussing EU's direct payments for agriculture. It is important for all Baltic States to speak with one voice," pointed out Aboltina.
The sides have agreed to cooperate at the parliamentary level and assume a joint stance on this issue, explained Aboltina.
As reported, today, Aboltina met with Estonian Agriculture Minister Helir-Valdor Seeder, Lithuanian Agriculture Vice-Minister Mindaugas Kuklierius, Latvian Agriculture Minister Laimdota Straujuma, European Parliament Agriculture and Rural Development Committee member Mairead McGuinness, and MEP Sandra Kalniete (Unity) to discuss the cooperation among the Baltic in pursuing the countries' common interests regarding the direct area payments in the European Union.
