Baiba Rubesa will be the Patroness of the Burns Supper
The Burns Supper brings together Latvian and foreign business people, diplomats and all those who are socially active and who share a common desire to honour Scottish culture, help charities and have a good time.
"Every Scot considers it to be a matter of honour to take part in the Burns Supper no matter where in the world he or she may be. I have noticed that everyone who attends this event gets a real kick out of upholding its particular culture, traditions and values. A scenario that has remained unchanged for more than 250 years has real value in itself and, moreover, in Latvia we have added the tradition of raising money for charity", says the Burns Supper Patroness Baiba Rubesa.
"The Scottish flavour of the evening will be maintained by pipers, the Address to the Haggis and traditional speeches including one to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns. All of this will accompany Scottish food and drink – especially whisky! We will also enjoy Scottish (and other) music and dancing with the music being played by the band Division 51 which features the well-known Latvian group Iļģi", adds Cameron Greaves, the Chairman of British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia.
BCCL selects charity projects each year and this year it is working with the newspaper Diena to support the project Saulainas Dienas (Sunny Days) whose aim is to help families that find themselves in emergency situations.
The donations emanate from any BCCL surplus for the evening and include proceeds from the sale of tickets to the Burns Supper as well as actual donations and the proceeds of the traditional raffle, tickets for which are sold during the evening. Tickets for the Burns Supper are obtainable from the BCCL office. This year supporters include Aldaris, Chivas, Gypsum Factory Riverside Residences, Radisson Blu Daugava Hotel, Taipei Mission in Latvia and Via Hansa (including the restaurant La Boheme).
Burns Supper
On 21 July 1796 the world lost one of its greatest poets when Robert Burns died at the age of 37. On the first anniversary of his death Burns’ friends came together for a ceremonial supper to remember the poet’s life and influence. Since that day the Burns Supper has become a tradition and is celebrated either on Burns’ birthday (25 January) or the nearest convenient day.
British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia
Founded in 1996 the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia is one of the largest associations for foreign entrepreneurs in Latvia. Its members include companies from Latvia and Great Britain as well as from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the USA and many others. The BCCL supports trade and investment both generally and especially between Latvia and Great Britain as well as providing a platform to knowledgeable and influential business and social contacts for all its members for whom it also enables direct access to business and governmental decision takers.
