Pabriks: Latvia's foreign policy cannot be imagined without a strong army that takes part in international operations

The world faces several challenges and many non-military threats could turn military. Similarly to insurance, if we save up at the expense of our cars and homes, then, during any potential crisis situation, we will have to pay too much, Defense Minister Artis Pabriks (Unity) emphasized during today's foreign policy debate at Saeima.

Isolationism can only be considered a strategic mistake or even malevolence, emphasizes the minister.

These statements were Pabriks' response to MP Iveta Grigule's (Greens/Farmers) call to withdraw Latvian troops from Afghanistan as soon as possible. Yesterday, an Estonian soldier was heavily injured in Afghanistan. A week ago, four Frenchmen were shot. In reaction, the Greens/Farmers are urging the government to begin withdrawal of forces. Denmark, Norway and France should serve as examples for us, emphasized the Saeima member.
