The Infectious Diseases Center (IDC) reports that influenza resulted in a death last week.
IDC's Raina Nikiforova told LETA that the patient was diagnosed as having contracted the infection, which, combined with several severe chronic ailments, caused life-threatening complications. The influenza was type B, she added.
IDC also reports that the flu bug is spreading. Last week, 15 more persons checked into hospital with symptoms - three in Daugavpils, ten in Riga and two in Valmiera. The intensity of the bug has grown 15%.
Epidemic proportions means 100 ill with flu out of 100,000.
