President Andris Berzins congratulates Muiznieks on becoming EC human rights commissioner

Today, President Andris Berzins met with the newly-elected Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks, during which he congratulated Muiznieks on taking his new post and wished him success in achieving his goals in the six-year term, LETA was informed by the president's press service.

During the meeting, Muiznieks informed the president about his main priorities in office, which include human rights education, children's rights, as well as human rights issues that have come up during the economic crisis.

The two sides also discussed the upcoming language referendum in Latvia, and agreed that it is a "politically inspired" event. They also added that it is important to continue the dialogue with society after the referendum, in order to strengthen unity of the people.

As reported, Muiznieks will begin fulfilling his duties as commissioner on April 1.
