Saeima, with 65 votes in favor, accepted the proposed statement on the importance of the Latvian language

Today, Saeima, with 65 votes in favor, accepted the proposed statement on the importance of the Latvian language. The parliament emphasizes that Latvian, as the sole official language, is enshrined in Latvia's Constitution and is among its basic principles.

Harmony Center, as well as MPs Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis (Zatlers' Reform Party) and Janis Reirs (Unity) did not participate in today's vote. Unity, Greens/Farmers, All For Latvia!-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK, ZRP and independent MPs all supported the statement.

It declares that Latvian, as the only state language, is inseparable from Latvia's national identity, essence, establishment and existence.

Latvia is the only place in the world, where Latvian culture and language can exist and develop. It is emphasized that Latvian, as the sole language in the state, plays an important role in ensuring democratic participation and unity in Latvia.
