"On Rubiks' Road" by Laila Pakalniņa at the 67th Venice Film Festival

The documentary "On Rubiks' Road" by Laila Pakalniņa has been included in the "Orizzonti Short film competition" programme of the 67th Venice Film Festival. The Festival’s "Orizzonti" section, dedicated to "new trends" in world cinema, is taking a major new step, strengthening and opening itself to all "extra-format" works (including short films), with a broader and more dynamic overview of the new forms adopted by the expressive languages used in cinema.

The Orizzonti Jury will be led by Iranian film director Shirin Neshat (President), who will be accompanied by Tunisian director and scriptwriter Raja Amari, Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz, Austrian film reviewer Alexander Horwath, and Italian director Pietro Marcello.

The jury will award the following prizes: Orizzonti Award (full-length films), Special Jury Orizzonti Prize (full-length films), Orizzonti Award (short films) and Orizzonti Award (medium-length films).

The documentary "On Rubiks' Road" by Laila Pakalniņa (Director), Uldis Jancis (camera) and Anrijs Krenbergs (sound designer) presents a humour-filled story about daily life - pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, dogs, birds and scooters - on the bicycle road named after Alfrēds Rubiks, the former Communist Party leader of Soviet Latvia.

Laila Pakalniņa’s participation in the 67th Venice Film Festival is the latest step for Latvian representation at prestigious world film festivals. This year Nils Skapāns’ clay animation "Wonderful Day" was displayed at the Berlinale Film Festival in the section "Generation", Jurģis Krāsons’ short animation "To Swallow a Toad" was included in the programme of the Cannes Festival, and Karlis Vitols’ animation "Eclipse" was included in the official out-of-competition selection at the Annecy Film Festival.

The 67th Venice Film Festival will take place from September 1 to 11.
