Research conference to be held on Lisbon Treaty
The Lisbon Treaty supersedes the previous fundamental EU treaties, by eliminating the European Union's pillar structure. At the same time, the Treaty enhances the role of the European Parliament and national parliaments, establishes the European Citizen's Initiative rights, as well as stipulates the accession by the European Union to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
The conference "The Lisbon Treaty: a look forward" will debate on the implications of the Lisbon Treaty for Latvia and for its every citizen. The conference is to initiate discussions among the law professionals about the impact of the Lisbon Treaty on the system of law in Latvia and in the European Union.
The key-note speech will be delivered by Prof. Dr. E. Levits, a Latvian Judge at the European Court of Justice.
The opening speeches of the conference will be available online, at http://www.esmaja.lv portal. They will also be published on the websites of the European Union Law Association and of both the ministries. Following the event, a compendium of the conference materials will be issued.
The conference is co-financed from the Management Partnership agreement concluded between the European Commission and the Government of the Republic of Latvia, the Norwegian Financial Instrument and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
The event is also supported by the European Parliament Information Office in Latvia. The conference takes place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kr.Valdemāra street 3. Media representatives are invited to register their participation by calling 67016 272 or by e-mail media@mfa.gov.lv.
